BandaAcheh : Medicins Sans Frontiers - Tsunami aid effort

MSF Gallery 2 - Tsunami aid effort: "MSF has five areas where teams are active providing emergency medical support in the Banda Aceh province of Indonesia. Here in Meulaboh, 250kms west of Banda Aceh, MSF has started work in the local hospital as well as visiting the surrounding area with mobile teams. The town was 50% destroyed and access to the area has been by helicopter or boat only."

Tsunami Shatters Economy in Indonesia (phillyBurbs.com)

Tsunami Shatters Economy in Indonesia (phillyBurbs.com): "The Asian Development Bank warned the tsunami could impoverish 2 million people across the southern Asian nations it battered, half of them in Indonesia. 'The poverty impact of the tsunami will be enormous,' said Ifzal Ali, the bank's chief economist.
Experts say a big infusion of reconstruction cash would be the best way to get the economy going.
With U.N. money, the government has hired 300 tsunami homeless to clear debris from hospitals and schools. It plans to expand the program to 3,000 people within months, although that's less than one percent of the more than 600,000 who lost their homes." Read On

"Karma is your experiences of body and mind. The word itself is Sanskrit; it means cause and effect. Your experiences of mental and physical happiness are the effects of certain causes, but those effects themselves become the cause of future results. One action produces a reaction; that is karma."

Greetings!

By Divine Grace, Singapore has escaped a massive natural disaster and all of us had a very comfortable & Merry Christmas. The magnitude of the Asia earthquake disaster is much larger than the Gurajat Earthquake which we helped in 2001. As our AoL classes are small, our teachers have decided to focus our efforts on Indonesia & Sri Lanka. We have called AoL Indonesia & Sri Lanka High Commission and they have requested your help as follows:

SRI LANKA:
(1) Children clothing

(3) Linen & blankets
(4) Canned / Packaged food eg bee hoon
(5) Packaged drinks eg milo. and ladies clothes if any.

Clothing / Linen:
Please ensure that your clothing are clean & in usable condition. Fold your materials & separate each category (children, men) into different bags and write the contents on the bag. This will save us a lot of problems from sorting. If you can store these in carton boxes, it will be even better as we are short of boxes right now.

Send an email to - Shailaja (radhavj@starhub.net.sg) or Chay and April (chaykk@singnet.com.sg) to let us know what you intend to donate. If your donation is a lot or heavy, please call or email us in advance to arrange the cargo so as to avoid the burden of carrying these to level 3.

Sri Lanka : Solutions for Children

Shing@lekkerdesigns.com Writes :
I enclose a couple more emails describing the efforts in Ampara, written by Anarkali's mother, in case you are interested please read on. They are starting a child-fostering programme which some of you might be interested in helping to collect funds towards, in your communities.

Solutions for the children

The child protection authority under DR Harendra DE Silva ( a friend
of ours) has a database of orphaned children, Children with one parent
,And they have commenced a foster parent scheme where a donor can give
RS 1500/ month which works out to USD 1800 per child for ten yrs of
fostering a child. The name and address of the child will be given to
the donor and Child protection authority will ensure that the child
receives the money monthly. If any one is willing to participate in
this scheme, which will include the children of Arygambay area, please
let me know.

Meantime I will purchase the school packs for the children, and the
two generators.cooking utensils, and other absolutely essential stuff.

Rohini my sister is returning to night and she can apprise you in detail.

What Other Cheap Buidling Materials Other than Asbestos ?

URGENT QUESTION FOR ARCHITECTS:

Much of the emergency housing that is being erected in Sri Lanka uses ASBESTOS as it is cheap and no one in Sri Lanka is really aware of the dangers of this material. Do any of you know of other CHEAP, STRONG, and DURABLE building materials you can suggest for this use? Anarkali's group and her mother's (her mother Sumi is a good friend of my mother's) are asking for suggestions of "new construction technology for quick construction and cost effective materials"

We cannot sit back and watch relief housing being built to save people in the short term only to kill them in the long term. If you have any suggestions, please let me/ them know.

Dearest friends,

If any of you are wondering what you can do to help, please check out www.rebuildsrilanka.org

My good friend Anarkali has set up this immediate and medium-term relief effort in Sri Lanka with some of her friends. Specifically, they are targeting the Ampara region on the Eastern coast of Sri Lanka which is remote and has been cut off from all outside it as the main bridge to it has been destroyed. The villages here have a mix of the 3 main communities in Sri Lanka (Tamil, Sinhalese and Muslim).

The donations they receive go directly towards helping those in need. Anarkali and her friends pay for all administrative costs incurred. Right now they are only looking for pledges of donation/ collection and will only ask for money ot be transferred once they have stabilised the situation on the ground.

Please check out her website. It is quite thorough in explaining what is needed and what they are trying to do to help.

A little goes a long way.

I can help co-ordinate with Anarkali if any of you would prefer.
Dearest friends,

Sri Lanka : Ampara District

8 Jan
Anarkali and her friends, through their NGO http://www.rebuildsrilanka.org/default.htm ( mainly
with funds collected amongst friends)are involved in looking after
about 750 families in Ampara district, in three villages called Sinna
Ulla ( Arugam Bay - A famous tourist beach) Kudakalliya and Passaracheniya.
The access bridge is washed away and only access is by boat. Armed
forces are helping with the logistics, and this group also have got
two boats to carry urgently needed food stuffs to the refugees. 40% of
the people are fisherman , 70% are muslims 15% tamils and 15%
sinhalese. They have been feeding these people from the 26th onwards
and next week govt has agreed to provide dry rations relieving them of
the financial burden of having to feed this large no of people. Some
families have fled the coast for fear of further flash floods,
tsunamis and tidal waves, but they come to collect their dry rations.

Area is under the command of COL Jagath Dias, his deputy LT COL Chargi
Gallage are co-ordinating relief efforts in the Ampara district.

A French team has set up a medical centre which is functioning
extremely well, therefore medicines are not necessary for this area .

The camps are just tents, which are not weather proof, and is in need
of things to make life comfortsble for the inmates. These people have
lost all hope ,having been subject to the war for 20yrs they were just
beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel with tourism picking
up. All tourist guest houses are destroyed, and the fisherman who
have lost most of their loved ones, especially children ,have lost
their boats and nets, in addition to losing their homes and
belongings.

Even though govt has ruled no houses can be built on the coast ,they
need to protect their fishing gear once they get them and resume their
lives. We are waiting for govt to take a policy decision about this
areas re- construction, and awaiting allocation of new land by govt to
commence the construction of houses to move these people out of theses
camps. Hence the need for tents, to protect them from the heavy rains
in the area.
The schools are damaged and many NGOs have undertaken to rebuild.

We need to build a small medical facility for these people, on a
permanent basis, and ofcourse the houses, and an orphanage. But we are
awaiting guidelines from govt about orphans, because we do not want
children to be taken for illegal activities.

We are providing children with a school pack consisting of pencils,
pens, erasers drawing books and crayons exercise books, just to give
these children some hope. Also planning to give the very small
children some toys, just to relieve them of the traums.Plastic water
bottle and a school bag will be given if sufficient funds.

Its extremely cheap to buy them here ,if cash donations are sent.
Also we need to give them kerosene lanterns, as there is no generator
to light up the area.umless we get sponsors for a couple of generators
to be purchased locally. While kerosene lamps are dangerous,a kerosene
lantern costs only four sing dollars locally.and we are looking at
that option.

That's why cash donations are better in order to avoid blockages at
airport and port clearing stuff and once it arrives we have no
control, as everything goes to govt. institutions and they distribute
them according to a needs base.
We already got 50 tents and we have a commitment for a further 200
but awaiting our clearence to send them, because we want to send them
to these people.

Tomorrow the President's senior advisor Mano Tittawela is going to this
area and I am in touch with him to get all these issues sorted out.
We need to clear all wells and clear the debri from the area to make
life better for these people, and we are hoping that the armed forces
will assist us soon. If not we will hire heavy eqpt locally and do it.

Airport is unable to clear stuff as fast as they arrive but the need
is so great everything just moves out to the entire coast line
affected by this tragedy.

If anyone wishes to tour this area when they come to SL we can arrange
to take them . Its about a 8hr drive from Colombo.

Meantime all commitments made to construct houses, please send the
money to the account on this website.

I am pleased to tell you that the Gangarama temple effort to raise
money to build homes on self help manner has received funds already
for 750 houses.
Therefore please contribute to re-building this remotest area in the
eastern province.
The donors can decide which area they want to assist.
I have also given you the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce website and how
to send monies to that., which will be administered by the chamber.

http://www.sossrilanka.org/

All these funds are being utilised in a very transparent accountable
manner , and audited accounts will be available.

Thanks for all your compassion in this tragedy, the enormity of which
is now felt world over. Sumi Moonesinghe.

How to Help : Asia Tsunami Aid Relief Organizations & Volunteers

Tsunami-Volunteers... work from Home

Would-be tsunami-aid volunteers urged to put in the effort at home JEN HORSEY

TORONTO (CP) - There has been such an outpouring of help for victims of last week's deadly tsunamis in south Asia that would-be volunteers are likely to encounter a busy signal if they place a call to an agency providing relief in the area.

The crisis has prompted an enormous response from Canadians who are willing to do anything they can to ease the suffering - including giving up their safe lives at home to venture into the heart of the crisis.

But aid agencies say now is not the time to head overseas.

"Simply because the situation is so chaotic," said Nicole Ireland, UNICEF spokeswoman. "I think to go to the crisis regions, that would be very difficult and would not make job of the field workers easier."

Red Cross personnel sent to huge disaster sites are generally specialists and all have been trained and entered into a database.
